Geely E5 electric SUV: 218-hp Chinese newcomer tested

Geely enters the European market with its all-electric E5 SUV. We tested it: 218 hp, 68.4 kWh battery, up to 475 km WLTP range.

Geely E5 electric SUV front three-quarter view, minimalist design

Geely Auto, the Chinese giant controlling Volvo, Polestar, and Lotus, is expanding into Europe with two models: a hybrid and the electric E5, which we tested in depth.

Understated, aerodynamic design

The Geely E5 prioritises discretion and fluid lines. Polished, flowing shapes make it blend into traffic rather than stand out. A traditional grille gives way to active-shutter air vents, while door handles retract flush. The rear features slim, horizontal light bars topped by a roof spoiler—a cohesive but conservative package that bets on aerodynamic efficiency over visual drama.

Minimalist cabin, cutting-edge tech

Inside, Geely opts for zen simplicity. A head-up display, wide digital screen behind the wheel, and a massive central touchscreen offer near-perfect clarity, though they require some adjustment time. The steering wheel is unconventional—flat-bottomed with just two spokes, resembling a Boeing control yoke more than a traditional wheel.

Soft, padded materials abound, even on the carpets, and assembly quality appears solid, though durability questions remain. An integrated wireless phone charger (which cools imperfectly) sits alongside two USB ports. Rear legroom is generous, typical for a Chinese SUV, but the business-class-style seats disappoint in reclined position comfort. The boot offers 461 litres with a false floor.

Modest power, controlled consumption

The electric motor delivers a modest 218 hp and 320 Nm of torque. The 68.4 kWh battery (60.2 kWh for base models) claims 475 km of WLTP range. This figure seemed slightly optimistic based on consumption observed during our short test, though only a longer journey would fully verify this capability.

Smooth, serene driving experience

The E5 isn't sluggish off the line: 0–100 km/h in just over 7 seconds. What truly impresses is its uncommon fluidity for this power level—no jarring "rocket" acceleration. This progressive delivery greatly enhances driving comfort. On the road, the Geely E5 stands out for exceptionally smooth, pleasant driving, quiet enough to induce drowsiness if you don't disable the ADAS alerts—which are thankfully easy to switch off.

Built on the GEA platform, it's a front-wheel-drive design with a conventional layout, engineered for everyday comfort rather than thrills.
