Automotive Branding Takes a Creative Turn

Mazda has pushed the boundaries of automotive merchandising by launching its own branded sneakers, coordinated with the interior color palette of the new CX-5. Developed in collaboration with Japanese shoemaker Spingle, the SP-MZD sneakers echo the vehicle's design philosophy for a cohesive brand experience.

Design and Features

Manufactured in Hiroshima at the heart of Mazda's automotive operations, these sneakers carry the « Sport Tan » hue visible inside the latest CX-5. The primary colorway combines:

  • Caramel-colored kangaroo leather
  • Black suede for visual balance and durability
  • Quality construction optimized for everyday driving wear

A full black version is also available for those preferring a more understated aesthetic.

Development Process

Mazda and Spingle invested two years in crafting this product, with reciprocal factory visits between teams to refine every detail. Seven unisex sizes are available, with each pair arriving in custom packaging featuring a sketch of the model.

Pricing and Availability

The sneakers are priced at 26,500 Japanese yen, approximately 166 euros at current exchange rates—roughly equivalent to the cost of a standard vehicle maintenance service.

Key limitation: These SP-MZD sneakers remain exclusively available in Japan for now. Moroccan and European customers interested in the product will need to wait for potential future international release.

Broader Context

This initiative exemplifies how automotive manufacturers are building lifestyle ecosystems around their brands beyond the vehicle itself. While it may seem novelty-driven at first glance, the quality indicators—Hiroshima manufacturing, partnership with a respected shoemaker, and genuine design attention—suggest a serious product rather than mere merchandising gimmick.

For CX-5 owners in Japan, it represents an innovative way to extend their connection with the Mazda brand into daily life.
