A simple oversight, but one that must be fixed

Tesla faces an unusual but mandatory recall: 15,000 Model Y units sold in the United States lack a simple label indicating the vehicle's maximum load capacity. Although no incidents or accidents have been reported, the NHTSA (US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) requires this omission to be corrected.

How the error occurred

It all started when an operator noticed the missing label on one vehicle. An internal investigation revealed that the verification and inspection tool responsible for checking the label was faulty. This inspection equipment malfunctioned until early May, explaining why several thousand Model Y units left the factory without this mandatory sticker.

Recall details and procedures

The recall currently applies only to the US market. Owners residing in the United States will receive a letter inviting them to visit a Tesla service center to have the label installed. The intervention is completely free of charge and will be executed quickly—taking just a few minutes.

Although the absence of this sticker does not directly endanger vehicle occupants or other road users, American regulations require its presence on all vehicles.

Tesla's recall history: a recurring pattern

Like all automakers, Tesla faces regular recalls. In August 2024, Tesla had to update over 1.8 million vehicles to fix an alert related to driving with the hood open.

More significantly, in December 2023, the NHTSA forced Tesla to recall two million units over concerns regarding driver attentiveness when using the Autopilot system. This decision reflected US authorities' commitment to ensuring Tesla strengthens its driver awareness measures.

What Moroccan owners should know

If you are considering purchasing a Tesla imported from the US, verify that this sticker is present on your vehicle. For Moroccan Model Y owners, monitor official communications from Tesla or its dealers for any future recalls.

This recall underscores the importance of rigorous quality control in automobile manufacturing and the vigilance of safety agencies worldwide.
