The new generation Dacia Spring is making waves before its official presentation. Official images are already leaking online, revealing a radically transformed design compared to the first generation.
A More Substantial Redesign Than Expected
Unlike the original Spring, which was based on the Chinese City K-ZE (itself a distant relative of India's Kwid), this new version will be manufactured in Europe — specifically in Slovenia. More importantly, it's essentially a Renault Twingo E-Tech completely reimagined for the Dacia brand.
Dacia has done impressive work concealing the Twingo's heritage. The side glass, often the weak point in such rebadging exercises, reveals nothing. To achieve the "crossover" look, black plastic wheel arch cladding has been added. The front face, rear end, and even the side panels are entirely different stampings with modified seals. The Twingo is completely unrecognizable beneath this new exterior.
Technical Specs Inherited From Twingo
Technically, the Spring will likely carry over the Twingo E-Tech's 27.5 kWh battery and electric motor. The question remains whether Dacia will opt for a "detuned" version with less power to justify a lower price point. Range should remain comparable to the Twingo, which is a significant advantage.
Competitive Pricing is Key
The Spring's real strength lies in its aggressive pricing strategy. Manufactured alongside the Twingo in Novo Mesto, it will now qualify for European government EV incentives — a crucial factor that had hindered the previous model's market appeal. Inside, the Spring will feature more basic equipment, especially in entry-level trim levels, to deliver an attractive starting price.
The first generation achieved a strong launch with impressive sales figures. However, without access to government subsidies in key markets like France, it lost momentum. With this new design, proven technology, and competitive pricing, the Spring should quickly reclaim its position as a leading option in the affordable electric vehicle segment.
One final detail: some leaked photos show vehicles with minor differences, particularly in rear door design. These variations may reflect different versions or markets, though this would be unusual for an entry-level model.
