Mercedes-AMG GLC 53 4Matic+: Raw Power, but Beware the Tax Bill

Mercedes-AMG GLC 53 4Matic+ profile shot, distinctive AMG grille and aggressive stance

The new Mercedes-AMG GLC 53 4Matic+ arrives with a clear mission: revive the joy of proper petrol engines. Gone is the turbocharged four-cylinder of previous generations. Instead, Mercedes serves a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder delivering 449 thermal horses plus 23 electric ones, courtesy of revised light-hybrid tech with an integrated starter-generator in place of the old belt-driven alternator.

Performance and Feel

The numbers speak volumes: 0–100 km/h in just 4.2 seconds, 600 Nm of torque (640 Nm with overboost), 250 km/h top speed breached effortlessly in under 22 seconds from 100 km/h. Paired with an ultra-responsive 9-speed dual-clutch gearbox, this GLC 53 AMG delivers snappy, explosive acceleration.

But the real story is mechanical character. That cavern-like note on cold starts, melodic mid-range rumble, and raucous growl above 6,000 rpm immerse you in a thermal soundtrack now reserved for the lucky few. The M256 engine, comprehensively reworked since 2018, impresses with instant response and fat torque delivery.

On the Road

Despite 2,065 kg and a high center of gravity (as with all SUVs), the GLC 53 AMG won't embarrass. Revised steel suspension with adaptive damping spares your spine while controlling roll. Rear-wheel steering paired with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 rubber (21 inches on our test car) delivers stunning grip. Sport mode sharpens trajectory precision noticeably. Turn-in feel remains composed for an SUV of this heft.

Thickly bolstered bucket seats, cavernous trunk (620 liters), a tech-rich dashboard: equipment strikes a sportier comfort tone without revolution.

The Real Sting: Tax

Here's the killjoy for buyers. With 214 g CO2/km (209 for the Coupé variant), fiscal penalties run as high as €80,000. Without relief, the total bill creeps toward €94,000 gross.

There is an escape hatch, though: claim three dependent children, and a 20 g/km and 200 kg abatement per minor applies, slashing the CO2 penalty (down to €5,404–€4,026) and nearly eliminating weight-based surcharges (~€7,000). By comparison, the €1,500 premium over the outgoing 43 AMG looks trivial against the mechanical gains.

Verdict

The GLC 53 AMG 4Matic+ is undeniably one of the most convincing sporty SUV propositions available today. Performance, mechanical charm, comfort—it all adds up. The catch is tax. Unless you're hauling a large family, the final invoice may sting.
