Startup Slate Auto has secured a grant of up to $5 million from the State of Michigan to expand its headquarters in Troy. This public funding reinforces Michigan's commitment to maintaining its leadership in automotive manufacturing and development.
In exchange, Slate Auto has committed to creating approximately 400 new jobs in engineering and design, with a minimum wage of $43 per hour for these skilled positions. The company currently employs about 325 people in Michigan, with a total expansion investment estimated at $10.4 million.
A Modular Pickup with Two Battery Options
The Slate Truck stands out through its versatility: this electric pickup can transform from a two-seater truck into a four-seater SUV, offering flexibility rarely found in the electric utility vehicle market.
Technically, two configurations are available:
- Base battery: 52.7 kWh with a 201-horsepower rear motor, delivering 241 km of range
- Extended battery: 84.3 kWh with an estimated range of 386 km, suitable for regular interstate travel

The pricing strategy is the Slate Truck's strongest differentiator. With a $25,000 starting price, it positions itself as one of the most affordable options in the American electric pickup market, making EV utility vehicles accessible to mainstream buyers.
