In major metropolitan areas like Paris, authorities have introduced dedicated carpool lanes, commonly known as "V2" lanes. These corridors, reserved for vehicles carrying at least two occupants, are expanding around major European cities, particularly in the Paris region and Lyon.
Speed Gains of 9 km/h on Average
One of the most significant benefits observed concerns traffic flow. Average speed on dedicated carpool lanes is 9 km/h higher than on standard lanes in the same network. This difference stems from lighter traffic density, since these corridors restrict access to vehicles carrying two or more people.
This speed advantage becomes especially visible during peak hours. Based on observations in the Paris region, between 45 and 48% of drivers are traveling solo during restricted periods (7:00–10:30 AM and 4:00–8:00 PM on weekdays), congesting standard lanes.
Violations Mount Rapidly
Despite just one year of implementation on the Paris ring road, over 100,000 violations have been issued for improper use of carpool lanes. Infractions are recorded via traffic cameras with fines of approximately 135 MAD, reduced to 90 MAD for immediate payment, with no points deducted from driving licenses.
Only 71 contested violations were registered, suggesting most drivers acknowledge their breach. Many remain unaware of access requirements: vehicles with two or more occupants, licensed taxis, ride-hailing services, public transport, and emergency vehicles are exempt.
