Alarming April 2026 Figures
France's National Interministerial Road Safety Observatory (ONISR) has recorded a troubling rise in road fatalities. In April 2026, 285 people died on metropolitan roads, compared to 248 in April 2025—an increase of 37 deaths year-over-year that signals a critical safety challenge for all road users.
Overseas territories recorded an additional 21 deaths. Over the first four months of 2026, the death toll reached 1,036 (963 mainland, 73 overseas), representing an 8% increase versus the same period in 2025.
Motorcyclists and Cyclists: Most Vulnerable
The most concerning trend involves motorcyclists, who suffered 27 additional deaths in April 2026 compared to April 2025. Cyclists were equally affected, recording 12 additional fatalities.
Outside populated areas—where many motorcyclists travel—the situation deteriorated sharply with 45 additional deaths. Inside cities, deaths declined slightly by 7.
Car occupants and pedestrians maintained stable levels, though ONISR notes these figures remain elevated for April.
All Age Groups Impacted
Age-group analysis reveals 25- to 64-year-olds recorded 29 additional deaths. Children and teenagers under 18 also saw a marked increase with 16 more deaths. Only the 18-24 age group experienced a slight decline (−14 deaths).
People aged 65 and over recorded 7 additional fatalities.
Serious Injuries: 8% Surge
Beyond fatalities, ONISR estimates 1,533 seriously injured in April 2026, up 8% from April 2025.
Personal mobility device users (EDPm) saw the steepest rise at +45% serious injuries. Motorcyclists (+8%) and car occupants (+6%) followed.
A 12-Month Downward Trend
Over 12 months, conditions worsened:
- +8% fatalities versus prior 12 months
- +3% compared to 2019 (the decade's 2020-2030 baseline)
- Car drivers: 1,608 deaths
- Motorcyclists: 708 deaths
- Cyclists: 247 deaths (+17% annual, +32% versus 2019)
- EDPm users: 84 deaths (+53%)
Series injuries over 12 months rose 5%, with motorcyclists comprising roughly one-third of 5,200 annual serious injuries, followed by car occupants (5,100) and cyclists (2,800, up 20% since 2019).
A Call for Collective Responsibility
These statistics demand collective awareness. Behind every number lies a broken life, a grieving family. Road safety depends on each of us: respecting speed limits, zero tolerance for impaired driving, constant attention, and civility on the road.
