Reimagining the Renault 4 for Leisure
Renault unveils the Renault 4 JP4x4 Concept at Roland-Garros 2026, on display from May 18 at the manufacturer's pavilion. This electric concept directly draws from the iconic Plein Air (1969) and JP4 (1981) variants of the original 4L.
The vehicle showcases a distinctive Emerald Green with a soft pearlescent finish, paired with a vibrant orange interior. This color palette is heavily inspired by the hues offered on Renault 4 models during the 1970s and 1980s. The concept embodies a spirit of relaxation and outdoor adventure, complete with summer equipment—a surfboard mounted on the roof, skateboards in the trunk—evoking vintage beach vehicles from earlier decades.
Bold and Minimalist Bodywork
The design is refreshingly unconventional: no convertible roof, minimal doors, a cross-shaped open roof and a fold-down rear hatch inspired by pickup truck sides. This configuration maximizes the "outdoor" character while remaining genuinely unique in today's automotive marketplace.
The interior also taps into the past: bucket seats with integrated headrests like those from the 1970s, mixed fabric trim featuring diagonal mesh sections, door panels and dashboard fully dressed in textile. A floating center console rounds out this self-aware retro ambiance. A JP4 badge appears on the exterior center pillar, while 4×4 badging adorns the front fenders and trunk.
Technology: Electric All-Wheel Drive
The concept is built on the foundation of the Renault 4 Savane 4×4 shown in 2025, featuring a ground clearance raised 15 mm above the standard Renault 4 E-Tech electric, with track widths expanded 10 mm on each side. The 18-inch wheels mount Goodyear UltraGrip Performance+ tires (225/55).
The key innovation: the addition of a second electric motor on the rear axle, enabling permanent all-wheel drive. This architecture facilitates movement across sandy, rocky, or unmade terrain—essentially transforming this concept into a genuine electric leisure 4×4.
A Dream That May Become Reality?
Although a concept, this vehicle evokes the legendary Matra Rancho and other beach vehicles of yesteryear. However, the structural and technical modifications required would demand complex regulatory homologation, incompatible with limited-series production feasibility.
Renault will also display the Renault 4 Roland-Garros E-Tech electric in Plein Sud trim with electric canvas roof, arriving at dealerships in autumn. The brand will complete its stand with the Twingo E-Tech electric and Renault 5 Roland-Garros E-Tech electric.
