After building a solid reputation for its restomods inspired by legendary Lancia Rally cars, Kimera Automobili is taking a decisive leap forward. The Piedmont-based firm, founded by Luca Betti, has unveiled its first entirely original hypercar: the Kimera K39, revealed at the prestigious Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este.
A Historic Partnership with Koenigsegg
The K39 draws its power from a 5.0-liter V8 biturbo engine specifically developed by Koenigsegg for this project. This marks a historic first: Koenigsegg has never before supplied its engines to another automaker. The results are impressive: 972 horsepower at 7,350 rpm and 885 lb-ft of torque at 5,500 rpm, with a redline set at 8,250 rpm.
Christian von Koenigsegg commented on the collaboration: "The K-39 is exactly the type of project that deserves something truly special: independent, emotional, technically ambitious, and built with a clear sense of purpose."
Koenigsegg's Technology Division (KTD) tailored the engine to Kimera's exact specifications, prioritizing throttle response and driving engagement. The approach includes a reimagined intake system and integration of the more responsive turbos from the previous Koenigsegg Agera. Owners will also gain access to the Koenigsegg Cloud, enabling over-the-air software updates and market-specific tuning.
Bold Design, Extreme Performance
Visually, the K39 represents a radical evolution of Kimera's design language while preserving its core identity. The design draws inspiration from the prototypes that dominated the World Sports Car Championship in the 1980s, with long, low proportions that defy contemporary aesthetic conventions.
The bodywork integrates sophisticated aerodynamic solutions: an S-shaped hood duct channeling air to a prominent rear wing, front fenders with sculpted louvers to evacuate hot air from the wheel arches, and massive intakes ahead of the rear wheels. This aerodynamic expertise benefits from collaboration with Dallara, the Italian specialist known for building IndyCars and high-level endurance prototypes.
Advanced Construction, Uncompromising Performance
The K39 is built around an all-new carbon-fiber monocoque developed specifically for this car, targeting a dry weight of just 1,100 kg. This extraordinary power-to-weight ratio promises supercar-level performance.
The transmission prioritizes engagement: a seven-speed manual gearbox feeding a rear-wheel-drive layout (with a sequential option also under consideration). Suspension uses a double-wishbone architecture front and rear, race-inspired and tuned for immediate response to driver input.
The K39 represents a unique fusion: the heritage of Kimera's meticulously crafted restomods combined with hypercar ambition, powered by world-class partners. With just 1,100 kg and 972 hp, this Italian machine promises a driving experience few will ever forget.
