A Strategic Trade Agreement Opens Doors

Canada has concluded a pivotal trade agreement with China to open its market to Chinese electric vehicles. Under this spring accord, Canada has set an import quota of 49,000 vehicles annually and dramatically reduced tariffs from 100% down to just 6.1%. The move aims to shore up Canada's automotive sector, which has been battered by protectionist policies and anti-EV measures from the United States.

Geely Moves First

Several manufacturers—Tesla, Chery, BYD, and Geely—quickly expressed interest in the opportunity. Geely, the Hangzhou Bay-based giant, has wasted no time, becoming the first to ship vehicles into the Canadian market.

The company is making a bold statement with its opening move: 18 units of the Lotus Eletre, an all-electric SUV that signals serious market intent. Though Lotus carries a British heritage, the Eletre is entirely designed and manufactured in China—a strategic fusion reflecting today's global automotive reality.

Dramatically Lower Pricing

The Lotus Eletre had already been approved and sold in North America since 2024, but at prices that lacked market competitiveness. With the new tariff regime, its price is expected to be slashed in half, making it far more attractive to Canadian buyers. This price cut sends a powerful signal: the new tariff structure genuinely opens the door for Chinese brands to compete.

More Models Coming Soon

Chery, another Chinese automotive giant, has already delivered approximately 150 vehicles to Canada, though these remain test prototypes rather than retail units. The company is preparing commercial launches of its Omoda, Jaecoo, and Exlantix brands, promising genuine model diversity in the coming months.

Broader Implications

For Moroccan and North African consumers, this development confirms a durable trend: Chinese automakers with mature EV technology and competitive pricing are steadily establishing footholds in North America. As their Canadian presence grows, it will inevitably influence global distribution strategies—potentially affecting the availability and pricing of these brands in Morocco and across the region.

The wave of Chinese electric vehicles reaching North American shores represents both a commercial milestone and a signal of the automotive industry's shifting center of gravity.
