BYD Targets Europe with Breakthrough Hybrid Technology
BYD is expanding its European footprint with the launch of the Dolphin G, a 4.16-meter compact sedan powered by a plug-in hybrid drivetrain. It's the first model in segment B to offer this configuration, a category where Moroccan buyers are increasingly exploring alternative powertrains.
Unlike the Renault Clio or Toyota Yaris, which rely on conventional hybrid systems, the Dolphin G features BYD's exclusive DM-i hybrid transmission. This setup pairs a gasoline engine with a rechargeable battery to deliver a claimed total range of 1,000 kilometers.
LFP Battery and Electric Range Options
While BYD remains tight-lipped on complete specifications, the Dolphin G is expected to adopt proven solutions from its cousin, the Atto 2. Two LFP battery variants could be offered:
- 7.8 kWh battery: approximately 40 km of pure electric range
- 18 kWh battery: potentially up to 90 km in electric-only mode
This architecture enables daily urban commutes with minimal fuel consumption, then seamlessly switches to hybrid power for longer journeys.
Understated Design, Aggressive Pricing Strategy
Unlike the bold Dolphin Surf, the Dolphin G adopts refined, balanced proportions. BYD appears to have prioritized mainstream appeal over design originality—a classic approach for the Chinese brand.
What should resonate with Moroccan buyers is the price positioning. BYD has consistently built market share through excellent value propositions, and the Dolphin G follows suit. Exact pricing hasn't been revealed yet, but details should emerge shortly.
Imminent Availability
The Dolphin G marks the first BYD model developed specifically for markets outside China. European commercial launch is planned for the coming weeks, with first deliveries expected by summer 2026.
For the Moroccan market, import details and local pricing remain to be confirmed. However, the arrival of this plug-in hybrid compact would represent a significant addition to the electrified vehicle options available locally—offering buyers a middle ground between traditional hybrids and full electric vehicles.
