A landmark win for BMW
BMW has delivered a breakthrough performance at the Spa-Francorchamps 6 Hours, securing its first Hypercar category victory. The achievement is amplified by a one-two finish with WRT, with the #20 crossing the line ahead of the #15, demonstrating the programme's strength on a circuit that traditionally serves as a final litmus test before the Le Mans 24 Hours.
Favourites struggle on Belgian soil
Pre-race contenders Ferrari and Toyota endured a more challenging weekend. Ferrari's 499P cars failed to find the ideal qualifying pace, forcing aggressive driving that led to mechanical issues and contact incidents. The #50 lost significant time due to a technical failure, while the #51 was forced to retire after a collision at La Source.
Toyota delivered an "anonymous" performance with the #7 finishing fifth and the #8 in tenth. The #8 showed promise, briefly leading the race after a short opening stint, but a fuel pump issue necessitated an extra pit stop that ultimately cost podium position.
Peugeot and Aston Martin show promise
Peugeot turned heads with pole position via the 9X8 #94, suggesting a competitive weekend ahead. An early collision at Les Combes with a stricken Mercedes GT3, however, disrupted momentum—the #94 recovered to seventh. The sister car also struggled through the six-hour distance.
Aston Martin bounced back positively, running the Valkyrie to fourth place. Genesis, operating a new LMDh prototype, banked its first championship points, a solid marker for the fledgling programme.
Margins remain razor-thin
Despite BMW's dominant appearance, gaps between top runners are minimal: just six seconds separate first from the fifth-place Toyota, with the seventh-place Peugeot a mere 13 seconds further back. This tight clustering validates the Balance of Performance (BoP) and promises competitive racing. A late-race safety car period also compressed the order.
Eyes now on June's ultimate test
Spa is merely a dress rehearsal for the Le Mans 24 Hours—a contest operating on an entirely different scale. At Le Mans, mistakes compound exponentially, weather can shift in minutes across different track sections, and attrition rates climb steeply over 24 hours. The ultimate victors will truly earn hero status.
No clear favourite emerges yet. Ferrari must stabilise consistency, Toyota has revealed uncharacteristic fragility, Alpine endured a nightmare and will seek redemption, and Peugeot continues working to unlock its 9X8 programme following regulation changes at launch.
The countdown to summer solstice racing begins.
