Geely Starray: The plug-in hybrid SUV challenging European conventions

Geely enters the European market with the Starray, a 4.74 m plug-in hybrid SUV offering 136 km of electric range and ultrafast charging from €34,990.

Relatively unknown in Europe, Geely sells over 4 million vehicles annually and masters the hybrid and electric technologies that captivate major European manufacturers. Owner of Lotus, Smart, and Volvo, the Chinese giant now arrives in Europe with two SUVs, including the Starray EM-i, a plug-in hybrid built on the GEA platform.

Outstanding charging performance

The Starray's main strength lies in its onboard charger, capable of accepting 60 kW on a rapid charger — among the most powerful in its class. The top-tier Max+ version features a 29.8 kWh battery delivering 136 km of electric-only range and recharging from 30% to 80% in just 16 minutes. The Pro and Max variants use an 18.4 kWh battery offering 83 km of zero-emission range, rechargeable in 20 minutes.

All versions include a 6.6 kW AC charger for home use: expect 3 to 4.6 hours for a full charge depending on the model.

Practical and intelligently engineered

The Starray adopts a restrained design, slightly more aggressive than its electric cousin, the E5. At 4.74 m long, it houses a well-designed cabin that mirrors the E5's layout but with noticeably superior build quality. The dashboard features a responsive 15.4-inch central touchscreen, physical climate controls (appreciated), a floating centre console, and dual inductive smartphone charging. All plastics are soft-touch and precisely fitted.

Engine and consumption

Under the bonnet sits a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre four-cylinder (100 hp, 125 Nm) that never directly drives the front wheels: it recharges the battery and powers a synchronous electric motor producing 218 hp and 262 Nm of torque. This architecture delivers 0-100 km/h in 8 to 8.2 seconds depending on the version.

Official fuel consumption drops to 2.4 L/100 km (Pro, Max) and 1.5 L/100 km (Max+), corresponding to 54 and 33 g CO₂/km respectively. Geely also publishes a more realistic figure: 6.2 L/100 km under real-world driving. Combined maximum range extends to 1,002–1,055 km thanks to the 51-litre fuel tank.

Compelling pricing proposition

Starting at €34,990, the Starray targets buyers seeking a practical, efficient, and well-equipped SUV. Weight surcharges (€300 to €1,150 depending on version) remain modest.

This Geely doesn't revolutionise the segment, but it delivers excellent equipment-to-price value, ultrafast recharging, and disciplined fuel consumption—three compelling arguments for winning over environmentally conscious European buyers who understand the true cost of ownership.
