A Fun, Retro-Modern Vision

Renault continues to surprise enthusiasts with a bold new concept for the electric R4. Following last year's Savane 4X4 Concept, the French carmaker is now unveiling the 4 JP4X4 Concept at Roland-Garros—directly inspired by the legendary JP4 that was sold between 1981 and 1990.

Sports Performance Meets Practical Engineering

This concept builds on proven technical foundations:

  • Permanent all-wheel drive with a second electric motor at the rear
  • Raised ground clearance increased by 15 mm
  • Widened track by 10 mm front and rear
  • Clean design language referencing the original R4's iconic silhouette

Design: A Beach Car Unfiltered

The JP4X4's true originality lies in its uncompromising body treatment. The concept abandons conventional doors and rear quarter windows entirely, embracing an utterly modern "beach car" aesthetic. Only the front windscreen remains glazed, creating a surprisingly luxurious cabin with "Fiat 500 Jolly" vibes for the 21st century.

Painted in colors inspired by the historic R4L palette, a large retractable canvas roof slides along the roofline—echoing Renault's new "Plein Sud" option now available on production R4 models (€1,800).

No Production Timeline

Unfortunately, Renault offers no timeline for putting the JP4X4 into production. This remains a show-car exclusive to Roland-Garros (from May 18 onward). The manufacturer is currently prioritizing the R5 electric, which enjoys significantly stronger commercial success.

That said, the concept perfectly captures what Moroccan buyers have been seeking: an electric vehicle emphasizing driving pleasure and lifestyle appeal over raw performance. A production version of this R4 could resonate strongly with urban drivers looking for practical, fun, and responsible mobility—a category underserved by today's electric lineup.

For now, the JP4X4 remains a tantalizing dream. But Renault has demonstrated the roadmap: lively, accessible, and genuinely desirable.
