New Chinese Plug-in SUV Takes on Established Rivals in Morocco

Geely Morocco launches the EX5 PHEV, the brand's first plug-in hybrid model in the country. Positioned as a single MAX trim — no optional extras — this compact SUV targets buyers seeking balance between electric range and thermal efficiency.

Bold Design and Accessible Premium Interior

The EX5's profile commands attention. Sleek grille, slim full-LED headlights with Follow Me Home function, 19-inch alloy wheels and standard roof bars all contribute to decisively audacious styling. At the rear, distinctive LED taillights and an aerodynamic diffuser reinforce the sporty character. Six exterior colors are available: Celestial Blue, Pearl White, Starlit Black, Titanium Grey, Bottle Green and Silver Grey. A panoramic sunroof with electric sun shade completes the package.

The cabin pursues premium at realistic prices. Perforated Eco-leather seating in camel tones, enhanced sound insulation and quality materials create a refined atmosphere. Two screens dominate: a 15.4-inch HD touchscreen center display and a 10.2-inch LCD driver dashboard, complemented by a heads-up HUD display.

Electric front seats with 6-way driver positioning (with memory), ventilation and recline to 180° deliver notable comfort. A fully flat rear floor optimizes passenger space. The central console houses a 15W wireless charger, while 34storage compartments and a 528-liter trunk enhance daily practicality.

Powertrain and Range: Mature Hybrid Formula

Under the hood, the EX5 EM-i pairs a 1.5L turbocharged petrol engine (174 hp) with a 130 kW electric motor (177 hp) for combined output of 260 horsepower and 262 Nm torque. This architecture, based on the GEA platform (Geely Electric Architecture), ensures smooth power delivery to the front wheels via automatic transmission.

The 18.4 kWh battery charges from 10 to 80% in roughly 40 minutes on a DC fast charger, or fully in 1.5 hours on a standard AC charger. Claimed consumption figures — 2.4 L/100 km under optimized use, 6.2 L/100 km in standard test cycle — depend directly on recharge frequency.

In daily driving, the electric motor covers urban journeys silently, while the petrol engine steps in seamlessly on longer routes.

Verdict: Well-Calibrated for Morocco's Market

At 339,900 MAD in exclusive MAX trim, the Geely EX5 delivers a complete package: 260 hp, exhaustive tech features, premium comfort and warranties among the market's longest. With no negotiable options, buyers know exactly what they're purchasing. In Morocco's plug-in SUV segment, this is a serious alternative to established competitors.
