Denza Z9 GT Review: BYD's 1,156 hp Premium Brand Takes on Europe
BYD's premium arm Denza arrives in Europe with the Z9 GT — a 5.18 m, 1,156 hp electric grand tourer that out-powers a Bugatti Veyron.

What is Denza?
BYD is no longer content with affordable EVs. The Chinese giant is now pushing into the premium segment in Europe through its Denza brand, launched with fanfare at the Palais Garnier opera house in Paris. The name is an acronym standing for Diversity, Elegance, Novelty, Zenith and Aspiration — marketing promises that, at least partially, hold up when you actually sit inside the Z9 GT.
Design: Big, Bold and Slightly Heavy-Footed
At 5.18 m long, the Z9 GT commands attention. The front end is restrained and clean in typical BYD fashion, while the rear is far more expressive, featuring ultra-wide multi-point taillights framing the Denza logo. Without exhaust pipes to signal performance, the rear bumper integrates a diffuser, complemented by a roof spoiler and side skirts. The overall silhouette aims for shooting brake drama but reads a touch heavy in the metal.
Cabin: Premium Finish, Technology Overload (in a Good Way)
The Z9 GT greets you by opening its doors automatically — and closes them via a pillar-mounted button, Rolls-Royce style. Inside, leather, soft-touch surfaces and quality materials genuinely rival European luxury benchmarks. Three large screens dominate the dashboard, paired with a Devialet-tuned sound system (yes, the French hi-fi brand). A cabin compartment with a temperature range of -6 to +40 °C adds another layer of refinement. Boot space comes in at 495 litres — modest for the size — plus a 53-litre frunk.
Drive Tech: Useful, Gimmicky and Everything in Between
The Z9 GT's rear-wheel steering can pivot the rear axle laterally, a genuine lifesaver in tight parking situations that saves wheels from kerb damage. The adaptive suspension auto-softens over speed bumps, though the effect isn't entirely convincing. Crab-walk mode raises eyebrows more than usefulness. Drift mode, on the other hand, earns a genuine thumbs-up.
Ultra-Fast Charging: 10% to 70% in Just 4 Minutes
Denza plans to roll out 3,000 Flash Chargers across Europe. The system uses buffer batteries alongside high-power hardware to deliver remarkable results: 10% to 70% in 4 minutes, and a full 97% in just 9 minutes — witnessed live during a demonstration. For Moroccan car buyers watching the European EV scene, this charging benchmark is a significant leap beyond current fast-charger standards.
Morocco Availability
Denza has not announced any plans for the Moroccan market yet, and no official pricing in MAD is available at this stage. Given BYD's accelerating global expansion, the brand's arrival in North Africa remains a possibility worth watching.
