Plug-in Hybrids Face Double Taxation: Heavy Purchase Fees and Parking Costs

Plug-in hybrid vehicles are hit with dual taxes: weight-based purchase surcharges and inflated parking rates in major cities.

Rising Taxes for Vehicles Over 1,500 kg

Plug-in hybrid vehicles long enjoyed purchase incentives in France. However, over the past two years, a weight-based malus (penalty tax) has complicated matters. Since 2025, the threshold has dropped to 1,500 kg of laden vehicle weight, with a 200 kg exemption for models offering more than 50 km of electric range.

Despite this exemption, taxes remain substantial. Rates start at €10 per excess kilogram and climb to €30 per kilogram in higher brackets. A Peugeot 3008 Plug In weighing 1,953 kg faces a €2,810 tax, while the Volvo XC60 Recharge T6 (2,150 kg) must bear €6,775. German heavyweights like the BMW X5 xDrive50e or Mercedes GLE exceed €15,000 in penalties.

Some Models Escape Lighter

Compact vehicles fare better. The Volkswagen Golf eHybrid and Kia Niro PHEV stay under 1,700 kg and avoid the worst. Compact SUVs under 1,900 kg like the Hyundai Tucson and Volkswagen Tiguan keep taxes between €1,500 and €1,800.

Large families have an escape route: an additional 200 kg exemption per dependent child (minimum three) can completely eliminate the tax.

The Parking Penalty in Urban Areas

The double burden continues in cities. In Paris, a "heavy vehicle" rate applies starting at 2 tonnes for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. In the 1st-11th arrondissements, hourly rates triple: €18 per hour, rising to €72 for three hours, reaching €225 for a maximum six-hour stay. From the 12th to 20th arrondissements, rates are lower but still steep (€12–€150).

This practice spreads across major French cities. Bordeaux adds a 30% surcharge for plug-in hybrids exceeding 1,900 kg. Lyon tacks on an extra €3 per hour.

Check Vehicle Weight Before Buying

Before entering a dealership, carefully verify box G on your future registration certificate. A government simulator allows precise calculation of applicable penalties. This detail is crucial for comparing total acquisition costs, including taxes.

Savvy buyers must never overlook this: with penalty differences exceeding €15,000, staying informed is essential.
