Alpina Returns as a Performance Grand Tourer

BMW has officially relaunched Alpina as its new luxury brand, positioned to sit between standard BMW and Rolls-Royce. But the German automaker has chosen a surprising direction with the BMW Alpina Vision concept: not an ultra-luxe sedan, but an elegant grand-touring coupe.

The concept's profile is closer to the current BMW M8 than to limousine territory. With its taut proportions and distinctive styling, this Vision represents a departure from what industry observers had predicted for Alpina's new chapter.

Deep Heritage, New Direction

Alpina is no newcomer. This small German firm has been modifying and tuning BMW vehicles since the 1960s and is regarded in its home country as a legitimate automaker in its own right. Acquired by BMW in 2022 and formally integrated into the Munich group, Alpina now sits within BMW's premium portfolio.

Interestingly, Alpina's founding family, the Bovensipens, has launched a parallel independent marque that continues offering bespoke vehicles without direct BMW backing—though still built on BMW platforms.

Villa d'Este Reveal

The concept will make its official debut on May 15 at the prestigious Villa d'Este Concours d'Élégance in Italy, where BMW is the primary sponsor and partner. It's a fitting stage to reintroduce Alpina to an audience of collectors and enthusiasts.

Importantly, this is currently a concept only. It doesn't guarantee an immediate production model, though BMW has previously built limited-run concept vehicles for this renowned event.

What Alpina Fans Might Hope For

Alpina enthusiasts—especially those who remember the legendary Z8 Alpina—are hoping for a true performance grand tourer to replace the aging BMW M8. The concept hints that Alpina may indeed pivot toward the premium GT segment rather than the luxury-sedan space.

The coming days at Italy's concours will reveal more about BMW's genuine intentions for this storied marque.
