Morocco Speed Cameras: At What Exact Speed Will You Get Fined?
Received a speeding ticket but the recorded speed differs from what was measured? Here's how speed cameras actually calculate violations.

Morocco Speed Cameras: Understanding the Technical Tolerance
You were doing 109 km/h in a 90 km/h zone and wondering why your fine shows 103 km/h? That's normal. There's a technical tolerance, also called margin of error, that protects drivers against fines for minor speeding.
This margin works in your favor—always better than nothing. However, it varies depending on the type of speed camera used by road authorities.
Fixed Radars: 5 km/h Tolerance
For fixed speed cameras, the tolerance is 5 km/h for any speed limit below 100 km/h. Above 100 km/h, a 5% margin applies instead.
Practical example: if you're detected at 97 km/h in an 80 km/h zone, the recorded speed becomes 92 km/h (97 − 5). You'll only be fined if you exceed certain thresholds:
- 50 km/h zone: fined from 56 km/h onward
- 80 km/h zone: fined from 86 km/h onward
- 90 km/h zone: fined from 96 km/h onward
- 120 km/h zone: fined from 127 km/h onward
- 130 km/h zone: fined from 137 km/h onward
This tolerance also applies to average-speed cameras ("tronçon") and roadwork site cameras.
Mobile Radars: Greater Tolerance
Mobile cameras (ETM — Équipement de Terrain Mobile) mounted on unmarked vehicles have a more generous margin: 10 km/h for speed limits below 100 km/h, and 10% above that.
In practice, if a road is limited to 130 km/h and you pass at 137 km/h, the recorded speed becomes 123 km/h (137 − 10%). You won't be fined. However, at 152 km/h, the recorded speed becomes 136 km/h (152 − 10%), and you'll be fined.
Fine thresholds for mobile cameras:
- Motorway (130 km/h): from 146 km/h onward
- Express route (110 km/h): from 124 km/h onward
- Built-up area (50 km/h): from 61 km/h onward
Mind Your Car's Speedometer
One more error margin can apply: your vehicle's speedometer. Car manufacturers build their own "safety cushion" into the display, which may slightly overstate your actual speed. But don't count on this heavily.
The Real Cost of a Fine
Speeding fines in Morocco carry penalties ranging from 68 to 135 MAD, plus loss of license points. It's not worth the risk: respect speed limits.
