VW Golf GTI Edition 50: The Petrol Sportscar That Still Matters
Volkswagen celebrates 50 years of GTI heritage with a limited-run Edition 50 packing 325 hp. A rare, daily-usable compact sportscar.

The Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 is a fitting tribute to five decades of legendary sportiness. As compact petrol sportscars fade in the face of electrification, this anniversary model—limited to just 50 units in Morocco—deserves serious consideration.
Bold Design, Genuine Details
There's nothing understated about the GTI Edition 50's presence. The wide honeycomb bumper, red brake callipers, and rear wing all add up to aggressive, purposeful styling. Volkswagen didn't resort to stickers alone. Our test car packed the optional « GTI Performance » package, bringing purpose-built lightweight alloys, an Akrapovič lightened exhaust, and Bridgestone Potenza Race semi-slick tyres. These upgrades go beyond cosmetics.
Cabin: Heritage Meets Modern Tech
The interior balances GTI tradition with contemporary amenities. Vintage-style sport seats offer superb support and comfort, red safety belts, red pedals, and « GTI 50 » embossed on the steering wheel boss underscore the brand's identity. Simultaneously, you get the tech you'd expect: sophisticated ADAS (Level 2 semi-autonomous driving), a generously sized touchscreen with full connectivity, and enough room for four adults comfortably—five at a pinch. The boot is modest but adequate for everyday use.
Engine: 325 hp of Honest Acceleration
The turbocharged 2.0 TSI, remapped to deliver 325 hp and 420 Nm, outguns even the Clubsport. The 0–100 km/h sprint takes 5.3 seconds; top speed hits 270 km/h. This is serious hardware. The dual-clutch DSG shifts with near-seamless precision, and when left to its own algorithms, it excels. In Sport mode, this Golf tackles tight roads with surprising composure. The motor never runs short of breath.
One caveat: the Akrapovič exhaust delivers muted sonics, even with synthetic engine noise piped through the speakers. Hardly the aural theatre you might expect from a GTI.
Chassis Up to the Task
The GTI Performance pack includes a chassis that matches the power on offer. That's the real advantage of petrol sportscars: you can genuinely exploit the power without electronic assistance. Grip is assured, control is total. This is a bona fide compact sportscar.
Morocco Verdict
The Golf GTI Edition 50 works as a daily driver that transforms routine trips into events. Scarce and capped at 50 units in the Moroccan market, these cars represent a passionate investment for anyone wanting authentic petrol sportiness—no electric pretence required. It's worth your time.
