BYD is making a decisive push into the European market with the launch of the Dolphin G, a plug-in hybrid hatchback engineered specifically to meet the needs of European drivers. This model marks a turning point in the Chinese automaker's continental strategy—comparable to Kia's pivotal shift with the Cee'd: moving from early entry to direct competition with segment leaders.
Better-Proportioned Design, Refined Styling
Unlike its predecessors (the Dolphin and Dolphin Surf), which had to adapt their designs to meet EuroNCAP safety criteria—resulting in a stretched, ungainly front end—the Dolphin G has integrated these constraints from the outset. The result is more balanced proportions, a more restrained aesthetic, and better cohesion with the broader BYD lineup alongside the Seal and Sealion.
Generous Dimensions, Enhanced Practicality
The Dolphin G measures 4.16 meters long and 1.82 meters wide, positioning it well above its direct rivals: the Toyota Yaris (3.94 m), Peugeot 208 (4.06 m), and Renault Clio (4.12 m). These larger dimensions aren't merely stylistic. They translate into greater interior space and a larger boot, delivering improved practicality. This positioning—straddling the city-car and compact segments—could broaden appeal beyond traditional hatchback buyers, capturing customers seeking additional room.
Proven Hybrid Technology and 1,000 km Range
Like its cousin the Atto 2 (sold exclusively as a plug-in hybrid in Europe), the Dolphin G adopts BYD's DM-i "Super Hybrid" technology. While the standard Dolphin and Dolphin Surf remain fully electric, the Dolphin G serves as the family's plug-in hybrid variant.
The announced range already reaches 1,000 km—a compelling selling point for Moroccan and European drivers concerned about the limited range of conventional powertrains.
Aggressive Pricing and European Production
Entry-level pricing sits under €20,000, positioning the Dolphin G as a formidable challenger against the market's best value propositions. Notably, it will be BYD's first plug-in hybrid manufactured in Europe, bolstering both pricing competitiveness and supply-chain efficiency.
With the Dolphin G, BYD moves beyond mere market presence to a genuine offensive strategy in Europe—and by extension, in aligned markets like Morocco. The brand is now playing to win the continent's most competitive segment.
