BYD in Morocco: from newcomer to EV leader in 3 years
BYD (Build Your Dreams) made its official Morocco entry end-2022 via Auto Nejma, one of the kingdom's main importers (a group historically distributing Mercedes-Benz and Mitsubishi). Three years later, BYD is the undisputed leader of the 100% electric segment in Morocco with about 60-65% EV market share in 2026, ahead of Renault Zoe (~15%), Hyundai Kona Electric (import discontinued), and very marginal volumes from other brands. On the overall market (all powertrains), BYD weighs about 4% of Moroccan new sales in 2026 — a remarkable score for a brand introduced less than 3 years ago.
This rise rests on three pillars. First: BYD's industrial verticality. Unlike Tesla or European builders that subcontract a large share of components, BYD makes its own batteries (Blade LFP technology), electric motors, power electronics, and even tyres. This vertical integration delivers a 15-25% cost advantage on EVs vs competitors — which BYD partly passes through to Moroccan prices. Second: the Auto Nejma network, with 8 dealers covering Casablanca (3), Rabat, Marrakech, Tanger, Agadir and Fès — not the densest in the market, but largely sufficient for current volume. Third: aggressive product cadence — a new model introduced every 6-9 months since 2022.
The fully-electric models (5)
BYD Dolphin Honor (from 269,000 MAD) — Compact city car (4.29 m). 60.4 kWh Blade LFP battery, 420 km WLTP range, 88 kW DC charging. The lineup's most accessible offer and the cheapest EV city car on the Moroccan market. Perfect for Casa-Rabat urban use with home charging.
BYD Atto 3 Comfort/Design (339,000-399,000 MAD) — Compact SUV (4.46 m). The absolute best-seller of the BYD lineup in Morocco with about 60% of total BYD sales. 60.4 kWh battery, 420 km WLTP range, 88 kW DC charging. Unbeatable price vs a comparably-equipped petrol Hyundai Tucson.
BYD Seal Comfort/Design/Sport AWD (359,900-599,000 MAD) — Sport sedan (4.80 m). 530 km WLTP, 150 kW DC charging. The Sport AWD version (390 kW, 0-100 km/h in 3.8 s) is the highest-performing EV sedan on the Moroccan market under 600,000 MAD.
BYD Sealion 7 Design/Sport AWD (489,900-549,900 MAD) — Premium C+ SUV (4.83 m). e-Platform 3.0 more sophisticated than the Atto 3, 82 kWh battery on the Sport AWD for 605 km WLTP, 230 kW DC charging. The most accomplished Chinese EV SUV sold in Morocco in 2026.
BYD Han EV (599,000 MAD) — Executive sedan (4.99 m). 605 km WLTP, Nappa leather, DiSus adaptive suspension, heated/ventilated/massaging rear seats. No equivalent under 900,000 MAD in Morocco — indirect competition vs Mercedes EQE (>950,000 MAD).
The plug-in hybrid DM-i models (2)
BYD Seal U DM-i (379,000 MAD) — C-SUV (4.79 m). Plug-in hybrid with ~80 km of 100% electric range, 18.3 kWh battery. The DM-i tech uses the 1.5L thermal engine mainly as a generator when the battery is empty, rather than driving the wheels directly — result: real-world thermal consumption ~5 L/100 km vs 7-8 L on an equivalent European PHEV.
BYD Song Plus DM-i (339,000 MAD) — Family SUV (4.71 m). Seal U DM-i's technical sister, more traditional design and 40,000 MAD cheaper. Same DM-i performance, 18.3 kWh battery, ~80 km EV range. Good pick for families with home charging and < 80 km daily commutes.
Our verdict: who should buy BYD in Morocco?
BYD today addresses three distinct user profiles. Profile 1 (urban, budget < 350,000 MAD): Atto 3 Comfort at 339,000 MAD or Dolphin at 269,000 MAD if you charge at home. Your Moroccan daily commutes (15-30 km round-trip) are trivial for a real-world 340-380 km range, and your usage cost drops to 25-30 MAD/100 km at the residential ONEE rate — less than a third of a petrol Tucson.
Profile 2 (mixed family, budget 350-400,000 MAD): Seal U DM-i at 379,000 MAD if you charge at home + occasionally take long trips off the charging network. The DM-i PHEV is unbeatable for this case: electric daily, thermal for Casa-Tanger or Casa-Marrakech without charging constraints.
Profile 3 (premium executive, budget 500-650,000 MAD): Han EV or Sealion 7 Sport AWD. The only EV sedans/SUVs under 700,000 MAD with > 600 km WLTP, premium equipment, and no direct equivalent in the thermal segment at comparable price.
Main reservation: BYD's used-car residual value is still TBC in Morocco — the brand has 3 years of presence, the first used Atto 3s reach the market in 2026 and definitive resale figures won't be known until end-2027. Current estimates (~40-45% at 3 years) are 10-15 points below Tucson or Tiguan. At equivalent budget, you pay BYD's faster depreciation; at constrained budget toward electric, BYD stays unbeatable on 5-year TCO thanks to fuel savings.
